What is "Twitter"?
"Twitter" is an online social-networking service. Many of our members know of, if not already frequently use it. Like blogging, it's free, exceptionally versatile and is rapidly gaining followers. It's often actually termed "micro-blogging", as it shares many of the social and technological attributes of weblogs. Although Twitter has only really been in the spotlight this year, it remained a concept limited to technologists and "geeks", since being founded in 2006. Celebrities, politicians, companies, groups and many high-profile organisations, have all helped advertise the phenomenon by endorsing a twitter-centric approach to communication and business. Presently, it appears few people or sectors have good reason to remain absent from the twittersphere, including the Irish Greyhound Skillnet.
How can Twitter and the Greyhound Skillnet help me?
We hope to use our Twitter account (username: GreyhoundSN) as a less-formal, though more readily accessible and updatable service. Members can subscribe and receive updates on their computers, [some] mobile phones, web-enabled TVs and even gaming consoles! Updates are short - 140 characters or less, much like a text-message - immediate and unobtrusive. By virtue or its concept, Twitter is very casual and offers people the chance to set up their own accounts before linking to, or "following", friends, family members, colleagues, organisations, clubs or groups, etc. It is this process of linking or subscribing to various twitter feeds, that ultimately establishes dynamic communication amongst an increasingly-large group of people. In our case, we hope more greyhound-orientated people and groups will use the service.
Much like our blog, the success of our Twitter initiative will be largely dependent on our members using it. By telling us how they would like to see us move forward with these new forms of digital communication, we can better-provide you with useful, customised and worthwhile lines of communication. Please do let us know your thoughts.
